Hi, I'm Jon.

I design and ship user-centered products in close collaboration with product and engineering teams. This site showcases recent work and my approach to solving complex problems. Let's talk about your next project!

Some of my most recent work

A 2018 study by McKinsey revealed that companies that prioritize design outperform their peers by 32% in revenue growth and 56% in total returns to shareholders over a five-year period. This shows how investing in good design yields measurable financial benefits.

Self-service Customer Portal

How I saved a large customer service organization over $1 million by identifying common customer issues and creating a self-service portal that made solving them a breeze.

You’ve got to start with the customer experience and work backward to the technology. You can’t start with the technology then try to figure out where to sell it.

My Design Methodology - My approach to Product Design

I often describe my work through five familiar stages, not because they're prescriptive, but because they provide a useful way to communicate how I think. In practice, these stages overlap, repeat, and adapt based on the realities of shipping product. Here's how I apply them in real-world scenarios:

  • Empathize. I start by engaging with users, shadow their daily routines and observe their behavior to understand their needs, frustrations, and emotions. I let go of my assumptions and focus on truly listening and learning.
  • Define. After gathering insights, I synthesize everything I’ve learned. I analyze patterns, pinpoint recurring issues, and create a clear problem statement. To make it actionable, I frame it as a challenge, like “How might we help...?”
  • Ideate. Here’s where I let my creativity run wild. I brainstorm as many ideas as I can. I explore crazy, ambitious solutions alongside practical ones. I then evaluate which ones are the most feasible and impactful.
  • Prototype. I take the best ideas and bring them to life—quickly and cheaply. I might sketch a concept, build a rough concept, or create a wireframe. My focus is to create something tangible that I can test on anyone and improve.
  • Test. I share my prototypes with real users and watch how they interact with them. I ask questions, listen to their feedback, and observe what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes, their feedback surprises me and sends me back to rethink my approach.
